HLP’s landscape architects prepare comprehensive landscape and visual character appraisals to provide baseline information and guidance on the landscape and visual impacts of urban extensions and new urban fringe housing sites.

Key aims are to inform detailed site design for integration of new and existing housing and to preserve and enhance the overall landscape character and quality.

Each appraisal recognises the principle components of the traditional settlement form and natural context, including pattern of hedgerows, trees and rural lanes, topography and landform, views and vistas. They establish recommendations to inform site design and mitigation of physical and visual impacts, and establishment of new landscape structure to integrate the new development into its context.

Stockings Farm, Gedling:

• Large 390 unit housing development on greenfield site at northern edge of Nottingham conurbation.
• Recommendations to mitigate visual and physical impacts, protection of view lines , topography and vegetation typology.

Dark Lane, Calverton:

• Phased housing development on 2.2Ha site at edge of Calverton Village, a designated conservation area.
• Identification of key components of built and natural context and vantage points
• Recommendations for materials, planting and signage to minimise the impact on the inherent rural character.
