An innovative solution to the problem of a very small housing architype, HLP developed a ‘two into one’ design solution which offers as good as new standards within a renovated exterior, bringing back to life the character and style of the Victorian terrace while providing a well-insulated modern aspirational interior with a garden in place of the old yard.

As part of the wider regeneration strategy for the Anfield / Breckfield neighbourhood, HLP put forward an innovative proposal to bring back to life an area of failing ‘two up, two down’ Victorian terraces which include environmental improvement alongside remodelling properties.

The pilot project developed the concept of two into one, a key element of our proposals.  The design tackles the challenge of small substandard dwellings with steep staircases, no private amenity space, and poor kitchens and bathrooms, by demolishing the seventies outriggers and combining two properties to create a 90m² three bedroom family house with a private garden.

Modern kitchens, bathrooms and staircase, together with Eco-Homes standards produce an attractive housing option at a viable cost.  Low energy specifications include good thermal insulation to the walls and roof space, and a positive air input ventilation system.
 
The pilot scheme was fitted out as a show house to assess response and demonstrate commitment to the community.
