Design and implementation of the public realm for the redevelopment of Red Lodge in New Earswick, a garden village in Arts and Crafts style designed by Parker and Unwin in 1904. Competing demands on the site include design of a care environment for the elderly, open space requirements and reinvigoration of existing heritage buildings through use and environment.

HLP are working with JRHT and Wates Residential to replace Red Lodge with a new 140-bed care home/sheltered housing and extra care development includes renovation of the listed Folk Hall and is set in extensive high quality public realm. The housing, amenities and public realm create a central social heart for the village.

HLP won a design competition for the creation of new high quality open space is for use by the wider community as well as for the enjoyment of residents of the New Lodge.

Key design principles were developed to ensure that the public realm responded to the specific requirements of people living with dementia, to the historical context and rectified features that detracted from the setting of listed buildings

The new public realm creates choice and diversity of spatial character, including active recreation facilities, sensory and kitchen gardens, intimate courtyards and open lawns. It is designed as an uplifting therapeutic environment based on dementia- and disability-friendly principles.
