Introduction of a recreational spine route re-connecting the residential neighbourhood to its network of green courtyards, the town centre and the historical site of Northampton Castle.

HLP were initially requested to assist Engie to respond to the Client’s brief to formulate a design guide / proposals for the enhancement and improvement of external areas at the estate of Spring Borough’s, Northampton, providing a coherent strategy for an architectural language to integrate ‘overarching’ design approaches through different zones of the estate.

The challenge was to overcome a wide range of architectural styles and building typologies which at present were resulting in a disjointed and confused urban realm, both public and private.

The design proposals formed a significant component of a successful external works and improvement bid, resulting in Engie being awarded an eight year framework of circa £100m across ten estates owned by Northampton Partnership Homes. Key principles of the overall design strategy included:

• Reconnecting the neighbourhood within the context of the city by integrating the public access through the site between the train station and the town centre
• Introducing a green route to provide a clear link through the site, along with areas of green / park space and enhanced pedestrian access
• Re-establishing a key sense of community through improved family housing and safer areas of play for children
• Creating a clear and consistent architectural vernacular to reinforce the 'whole neighbourhood, whole estate' ethos
• Emphasising natural surveillance to promote a safe and secure community a deter anti-social behaviour and crime.
