HLP have been engaged in a series of sensitive remodelling and refurbishing phases to accommodate and improve educational and residential uses.

Hilda Constance Allen Building (HCA) dates back to between 1927 and 1930. HCA is a mellow narrow red brick residential college building designed by Slater & Moberly Listed Grade II and forms part of Liverpool Hope University’s, Hope Park Campus.

HCA remains in active educational use as offices, library, classrooms and student residential accommodation and remains a good example of an early-mid 20th Century, teacher-training college on a grand scale with austere vernacular revival styling.

Two striking accommodation wings flank the Rector’s Lawn. The wings are identically styled with paired and triple-light mullioned windows divided by slim brick mullions and dormer windows at roof level. Chimney stacks rise from the roofs, all with a V-section rib that continues down the wall face to a brick corbel. Our design replicates other ashlar surrounded entrances found elsewhere with traditionally crafted rope twists, coins and headstones. We sensitively replaced windows, refurbished corridors, introduced electronic light wells, LED fittings and HLP designed desks to suit the scale and feel of the tutorial offices.
