Fiona Brettwood
B.A. (Hull) Dip Arch, RIBA
Partner, Architect
Fiona’s experience covers a wide range of sectors, with particular
emphasis on client consultation – involving the clients and
users in the design of buildings and environments. Involvement generates
successful design, and Fiona has used consultation to design housing
schemes, community resource centres, sports facilities and Sure Start
buildings.
Large-scale strategic masterplanning projects, including
Sunderland ARC and Bowburn Village form another aspect to Fiona’s
use of consultation. She has worked on complex masterplans for
entire settlements, housing estates, and regeneration areas, including
Cleadon
Park in South Shields, which combines a major housing development
with education, health and community facilities.
Fiona was appointed
by the New Opportunities Fund as a technical advisor for the
Neighbourhood Nurseries Initiative; this role,
combined with her experience in helping client groups make successful
funding
bids, gives her a unique perspective on Lottery and European
funding sources.
Her teaching experience at Northumbria University
includes Architecture, Housing & Architectural Technology,
and adds to her skills in communication and translation of design
ideas.
Fiona’s considerable knowledge of, and expertise in,
community buildings led to her co-authoring a chapter in “The
Architect’s
Handbook” on the design of community centres.
